new camera

I FINALLY GOT A NICE CAMERA!!!
one of my very best friends traded me for it :)
how wonderful is he!!!?
I have to be honest, on some level I thought that once I get a nice camera, all of the sudden my pictures would look magnificent..
....i don't think that is reality.
Its a Canon EOS 50D-- I have all of the books and everything and need to start reading up, but any advice you guys have? or good websites to check out?

I can not wait. I am obsessed with nature and beautiful scenery and I can't wait to start snapping away.
I'm going to take the advice of a twitter friend and become a tourist in my own city and take tons of super cute pictures!!! (hopefully..)

  1. wow that looks like a really nice camera! how exciting!! and i know what you mean about suddenly having magnificent-looking photos... i was hoping for the same when i got our camera! ours is also from a friend and he had lost the manual... i need to find an online manual or something because i have so much to learn!!

  2. a lot of it has to do with your lenses. but just make sure to shoot on manual. you will learn much more and way faster. keep your depth of feild shallow and your picture will look amazing. and it looks like your iso might be a little high ( that is what gets the grainy look) keep it lower for better quality. I hope this helps! as long as youre shooting, thats all that matters:)

  3. Yay! Congrats on the new camera. I don't know much about Canon cameras, but this is the website I do a lot of my shooting research on: http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/50d.htm. I am definitely a believer though that the best teacher is practice.

  5. My best advice? Shoot as much as possible!! To me, it's all about trial and error. You'll learn what works and what doesn't the more you mess around with it! Although, the books should help you get a jump start. :)

  7. Hey Olivia-

Yay for the new camera! I found you on twitter through Oh Sweet Joy. I was reading through your blog and totally recognized you. I grew up with Kristin and we went to elementary school together. I cannot believe you are married to little Brian. He's so cute!

Anyway, I live in Oak Hills and am a photographer in the area (www.lindseylyonsphotography.com). I would join an online forum (clicking moms- you don't need to be a mom or bloom forum). I learned a lot from both places (and still do). I also worked with a photographer in the area who taught me a ton! Good luck!
