organized: define a space

One thing that I have found to be very helpful in organizing homes is to have a clear definition of a space. This can be a drawer, desk top, pantry etc.  Decide a very specific purpose for that space and organize it accordingly.

Using the motto (that really came originally from my mom) Everything has a home: if it doesn't have a home then you actually don't need it is a great test to see how this can work for you.

Say, for example, you have a small desk in your kitchen--

STEP ONE: take inventory of what its currently being used for/what you have piled on it.

bills
calendar
pictures
stamps/address book
stationary
kids art work
things that need to be filed
receipts

STEP TWO: ask yourself what you REALLY use the space for and what you WANT to use the space for.

stationary
paying bills
calendar

STEP THREE: take all other things OUT and away and put them in new homes. If you can't find a home for them, recycle.

-receipts: go through your receipts and keep the ones you need, recycle the ones you don't, purchase a receipt holder and keep it in your purse or car

-things that need to be filed: FILE THEM

-kids artwork: hang it up, throw it away or save in a box for them in the attic

-pictures: buy photo albums and put them in it or buy photo boxes to store them in or throw them out.

STEP FOUR: organize the things you've decided to define the space with
